Pardons, paroles, and clemency files, 1847-1849.

The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the pardoning of individuals convicted or fined in all criminal and penal cases, except those of treason and impeachment. This series consists of letters, petitions, affidavits, and other legal documents relating to pardons from crimes, parole from sentences, and remission of fines imposed. Most items give details of the crime and of the criminals's background and family life. The crimes committed include murder, assault and battery, rape, larceny, polygamy, and gambling. Some of the most prominent requests for pardons include the following: Waits Palmer of Bibb County for an "affray" with Uriah Johnson; Alfred, a slave owned by Nolan J. Wright of Chambers County, for killing a child slave; Carter Parker of Coosa County for an "affray"; Francis Cobia of Henry County and William Bodiford of Lowndes County for killing a male slave in their respective counties; Nicholas Eddy of Lawrence County for second degree murder; Bradford Hambrick of Madison County for assault and battery; James W. Houston of Mobile County and James Bullock of Shelby County, each for assault with the intent to kill; William Shy of Montgomery County for attempted murder; and Ben, a Mobile slave owned by Harry Cary, for raping a white woman.
